Thanks to everyone who came to the Emergency General Meeting yesterday and apologies to those who couldn’t come. We had good debates on four motions and all were passed, two with amendments. Our President also reported on motions passed by the Committee regarding the appointment of the new DVC Research, and encouraging PhD external examiners not to resign their posts. Please see the Motions section of our website for the texts of all these motions.
Of most pressing concern to the current ballot on the UUK offer to constitute a Joint Expert Panel to work on a new valuation of the USS fund, we were recommeded to circulate the following petition to members: https://goo.gl/forms/jpuLLPtkgLOigF2O2
As a consequence of the motions passed, branch policy is now that of “no detriment” in respect of USS, that there should be a Special Higher Education Sector Conference specifically to discuss the USS dispute, and that Sally Hunt should resign as General Secretary (and a late motion will be put to Congress to this effect).
Congress and Higher Education Conference are the supreme policy-making bodies of UCU (https://www.ucu.org.uk/article/3414/Annual-congress–sector-conference) and will take place 30th May to 1st June 2018. As a branch, we are entitled to send two delegates this year to debate and vote on our behalf. Anyone wishing to be considered as a delegate should please email our Branch Secretary, Mike Finn, by Wednesday 18th April.
